Delivering an effect on a confirmed target, from a position the target cannot anticipate.
The problem
The gap between finding something and being able to act on it is where opportunities are lost. Calling for an effect from elsewhere takes time the situation rarely allows, and an effect delivered imprecisely is a political problem as well as a military one. A section needs its own means of engaging what it has found, accurately, with a person deciding.
How it runs
A typical deployment
- 01
Find and confirm
Reconnaissance aircraft or ground observation establishes the target, with onboard tracking holding it.
- 02
Launch from where you are
A tube on a tripod, a rail, a hand launch, or a release from a parent aircraft or vessel. No prepared site.
- 03
Hold until certain
The loitering aircraft stays on station while the operator confirms the target and what is around it.
- 04
Commit, or wave off
Engagement happens on an operator's instruction, and an aborted run returns to the loiter rather than being wasted.

Assess
The reconnaissance aircraft that found the target observes the result and reports into the same picture.
